Session Line-Up

  • Successful businesses serving the nonprofit sector have to harness the power of the complex ecosystem they operate in to overcome the biggest challenges of having nonprofits as customers. Hear lessons learned from two case studies on ecosystem-led growth at two early-stage, social impact start ups led by Social Entrepreneur, Mitch Stein. This will be a raw, inside look at the founder journey for both a "failed" business in the recent past and the current happenings within a high-growth business, highlighting the key learnings relevant to anyone serving the nonprofit sector and their vendors.

Pond, Mitch's first startup, was an innovative digital marketplace between nonprofits and the numerous types of vendors specific to nonprofit work. While the company saw success in engaging a robust community, scaling the business model proved unattainable. Chariot, where Mitch is now the Head of Strategy and one of their first employees, is also engaging a complex ecosystem, but seeing success by better aligning to core, repeatable needs for each stakeholder.

Mitch will review why the ecosystem around nonprofits is so critical, where Pond fell short and how he's implementing those learnings in his role today. This session will shed light on the realities of entrepreneurial work in our sector and hold space for tough conversations about failure and where to go next after it happens.

  • When serving the Impact Economy, it’s easy to make the mistake of killing your client relationship with intended kindness. But as any good therapist will tell you, setting and maintaining boundaries is the key to any healthy relationship. How can you set clear, appropriate, enforceable (yet adaptable) boundaries in the sales process, maintain them during delivery, while absolutely delighting your clients and helping advance their missions? This presentation will share best practices across the client lifecycle.

  • Building a technology application and/or service business is hard work, and requires understanding and prioritizing where you believe opportunity can be found. Many large data platform ecosystems promise business partners tiered accomplishments and access, and can sometimes come at the cost of being deeply invested in these platforms’ technologies or sales processes. However, businesses need agility, and the capability to prioritize their own staff’s needs. How have businesses successfully navigated multiple platform ecosystems, and what are their takeaways for diversification towards opportunity? Learn from ecosystem veterans the promise and possibilities of this journey.
